Geometry: distinguish boundaries, surfaces and angles
Before you start: Multiply lengths, add side lengths and identify a right angle.
Perimeter measures a boundary; area measures a surface
A rectangle 8 m long and 3 m wide has perimeter 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22 m. Its area is 8 × 3 = 24 m², because three rows of eight unit squares cover it. Metres measure length; square metres count surface coverage. A larger perimeter does not guarantee a larger area: a 1 by 10 rectangle has perimeter 22 and area 10.
Why triangles and parallelograms have their area formulas
Cutting and moving a triangular end of a parallelogram turns it into a rectangle of the same base and perpendicular height, so its area is base × height. Two congruent copies of a triangle make a parallelogram, giving triangle area = base × height ÷ 2. A triangle of base 8 cm and perpendicular height 3 cm has area 12 cm². A slanted side is not automatically the height.
Angles and polygon angle sums
Acute angles are between 0° and 90°; a right angle is 90°; an obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°. A simple polygon with n sides can be divided into n − 2 triangles, so its interior angles sum to (n − 2) × 180°. A pentagon's sum is 540°. Only for a regular pentagon are its five angles necessarily equal, each 108°.
Right triangles and circles
In a right triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the side opposite the right angle. For legs 3 and 4, c² = 9 + 16 = 25, so c = 5. Do not apply this relation to an arbitrary triangle. For a circle of radius r, diameter = 2r, circumference = 2πr and area = πr². With r = 3, these are 6, 6π and 9π respectively; do not mix their units.
Try it yourself
A rectangular floor is 6 m by 4 m. Find its perimeter and area. A triangle has base 6 m and perpendicular height 4 m: find its area.
Show answer and explanation
The rectangle has perimeter 20 m and area 24 m². The triangle has area 12 m², half of 6 × 4. Its perimeter cannot be determined from just the base and height.
